If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don’t Want to Be Right
[A Message by Pastor Idowu Iluyomade at Digging for Gold Service on Tuesday, October 31, 2017]
PSALM 91:8 - “Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.”
One of the ways one can receive the reward of the righteous without doing anything to deserve it is when you experience the favour and love of God. There are various types of love – logical, Eros, Philia, Philautia, etc. There is also agape love – which is the kind of love God has towards us. Agape love involves a decision, it is sacrificial and unconditional. One of the cardinal points regarding agape love is that there is no reason why God loves us – He just loves us. Once there is a reason, it ceases to be unconditional because there is a condition, and once there is a condition there is an expectation to live up to that condition – failure of which leads to disappointments and separation. God just chooses to love us with an everlasting love. There is nothing we have done to earn or deserve the love of God.
Like any other kind of love, agape love involves attraction. Attraction involves a force or a magnetic pull towards the object of attraction. It means evoking interest in a thing or someone. Examples: iron is naturally attracted to a magnet, likewise butterfly to pollen grains or ants to sugar. The opposite of attraction is repulsion. In essence, what attracts A may repel B because different strokes are for different folks. For example, in some countries, women are sent to fattening camps to make them gain weight because fat women in their cultures are considered beautiful and attractive. Meanwhile, some people would pay a lot of money and go to any length to lose weight because they believe slim or skinny women are more beautiful and attractive. In some other cultures, the longer the neck of a woman is, the more attractive she is.
Man’s Attraction to God
The Bible says in Psalm 8:4 that what is man that God is mindful of him. What did God see in us? What attracted us to Him to the extent that He offered His ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, JESUS CHRIST to die for us? How can the Holy God be attracted to sinners? Why should Saul be the chosen one despite all his persecutions against the church (Acts 26:9-11, 1 Corinthians 15:9, 1 Corinthians 1:26-29)? How could Jesus Christ be hobnobbing with sinners and drunkards (Matthew 11:19)? Why should He die for us? Peter tried to stop Him (Matthew 16:21-23), Pilate couldn’t stop His crucifixion, nothing could stop Him from dying for us. He decided to love us unconditionally and sacrificed His life for us. He said “if loving you is wrong, unpopular and against common sense, then I don’t want to be right. I would rather live in your world than live in Mine (Heaven) without you.” He chose to love and save us so that we can be with Him through all eternity. We did everything to Him that could make Him turn His back on us (Isaiah 53), but He persisted. Our sins caught His attention and attracted us to Him and He loves us still. God chooses to use the foolish things to confound the wisdom of the wise. Some people also have taken unpopular decisions in marriage. When they faced opposition against marrying who they love, they decided to take the unpopular decision and in the long run they have no regrets.
However, it is extremely important to note that though we agree that if loving someone is wrong, we don’t want to be right, there are some ancient Biblical Principles that we can’t afford to neglect. When it comes to love and marriage, “do not be unequally yoked”.
Jesus came to die for us all. He said I didn’t come for the righteous, I came for the sinner, poor, lonely, depressed, broken-hearted, abandoned, and dejected –this is what attracted us to Him. If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as Your Personal LORD and Saviour, you need to enter into a covenant with Him because He has great plans for you. He suffered for you so that you will have an overflowing abundant life. If you are willing to repent and surrender your life to Jesus Christ, then pray this prayer right now: LORD Jesus, I come to You right now. I know I am a sinner, please forgive me my sins. With my mouth, I confess that from right now, Jesus, I accept You as the LORD of my life. Please change my heart from a disobedient heart to an obedient heart. I believe that it is because of me You came into this world. You died for my sins, You took away my sins, take away my problems also. Please write my name in the Book of Life, and give me a new beginning in Jesus Mighty Name.
